Kindle has changed the way many people read and purchase books. Its user interface allows for easy access to a person's favorite books and library of borrowed or purchased books. Fortunately, there is also software available for individuals who want to utilize their personal computer to read books on their PC.

Kindle for Windows software is free to download and allows users to access their Kindle libraries. In Windows 8, the software works like an app and gives users many of the same functions that are available on their Kindles. The background can be changed so that a person can choose from white with black lettering or a black background with white text. Also, fonts and font sizes can be changed to make the text easier to read.

One of the great things about using this type of software is that Amazon has created an area in its cloud syncing service that keeps books, notes, highlights and bookmarks synced between devices. This allows a user to read using one device and pick up in the same exact spot later on another device.

If someone wants to browse for new books to purchase, one drawback of the PC application is that it does not allow integration with the Kindle store. However, it's probably just as easy to access the vast array of Kindle books for sale by utilizing a web browser.

Amazon is continuously updating its software and the amount of material it has available. This has led to challenges with downloading comics, but Amazon usually solves these types of challenges fast.

With the occasional flaw, Kindle software for the PC is generally an excellent way to read a book.

  • Utilizes Amazon's Whispersync technology so that reading positions, notes and highlights are synced between devices
  • The software has excellent reading controls
  • Software allows the user to annotate

  • Has had occasional errors when downloading comics
  • The Kindle store is not integrated into the app
